The Impact of Bank FX Margins on Your Clients

September 15, 2025by Optimal Currency

Introduction

This blog explores how bank FX margins impact your clients’ transactions, and how partnering with a specialist FX broker can add value, build trust, and support your regulatory obligations.

The Problem: high FX costs and client inertia

Many clients stick with their bank for foreign exchange transactions, often due to convenience or becasue of a lack of awareness about alternative options.

However, this inertia can come at a significant cost. Banks often charge high FX margins, typically built into the exchange rate, which can result in substantial losses for clients.

The Hidden Costs of Bank FX Margins

When your client transfers funds throughtheir high street bank, the FX margin is typically built into the exchange rate.

The bank might charge no explicit fee, but the cost is still there, often 2–3% above the true market rate.

For example, if the real (interbank) GBP/EUR rate is 1.1700 and your client receives 1.1370, the bank has taken a 2.82% margin. On a £250,000 transfer, that’s a hidden cost of over £7,000.

How Optimal Currency can help

Optimal Currency will speak to your clients about their options, including what their bank is offering them.

This gives the client the opportunity to understand the full cost of the bank’s rate and cost offering and to be able to make a clear comparison between the two.

There is no pressure to trade and your client can ask for a comparison as many times as they like prior to electing to trade.

Why this matters under Consumer Duty

The FCA’s Consumer Duty framework demands higher standards of accountability and client protection. For IFAs and accountants, this means:

  • Understanding what your clients are being charged across all financial services.
  • Avoiding foreseeable harm, including hidden or excessive FX costs.
  • Delivering value and demonstrating how recommended services support client outcomes.

At Optimal Currency, we believe in providing clear and competitive pricing. Every client receives:

  • Live exchange rates quotations to allow clear comparison
  • Documented Pricing Policy
  • Dedicated Broker support to assist with the timing of exchanges

In the case of the earlier example, this could mean a considerable saving:

Transfer Amount: £250,000

Bank Rate: (1.1370) €284,250

Optimal Rate: (1.1650) €291,250

Difference: €7,000

In this real-world example, the client would have received €7,000 more through an Optimal Currency broker, offering clear, wholesale-linked pricing.

We also provide partners with the ability to track rates for multiple clients, so accountants and IFAs can monitor client outcomes and support best-interest advice.

The benefits of an FX partner for IFAs and Accountants

There are clearly a number of benefits, for IFAs and accountants that have clients who trade currency in working with an expert currency broker.

Here are some:

  1. Professional Accountability: You can refer clients to a trusted FX partner with full confidence in pricing and regulatory alignment. That builds your credibility — and reduces risk.
  2. Improved Client Trust and Retention: When clients save thousands through the referral, you’re not just protecting their money. You’re demonstrating proactive value, and giving them a reason to stay loyal.
  3. Regulatory Peace of Mind: Like our financial partners, we are FCA regulated, embracing Consumer Duty as culture rather than a tick box exercise.

By partnering with Optimal Currency, you can deliver better outcomes for your clients, build trust, and support regulatory compliance.

With clear pricing, real-time comparisons, and FCA regulation, we offer a valuable solution for IFAs and accountants looking to provide cost-effective and client-centric services.

Want to know what your clients are really paying?

We offer a free FX rate comparison for financial professionals. Simply share a recent transfer example, and we’ll show how it compares to our wholesale-based pricing, with no obligation to switch.

This isn’t about changing providers. It’s about empowering your clients to make informed decisions, and empowering you to meet Consumer Duty head-on.
